Pat Cimba, Plant Manager

With nearly 30 years in the business, Patty Cimba has sent it all. Having started three decades ago on the floor, she learned every aspect of the business, from being a brusher/finisher to a gluer to handling gloves. As a quick study, she learned different trades until she became proficient at each task. Then, she would move on to the next challenge.

As general manager, her employees have a special respect for her because she was once on the floor and knows how goods are logged in, tracked and cleaned. Her day begins at 5:30 a.m. and, during busy seasons, can be 11 hours long. She says it’s her business ethos “to stay until the very last floor person leaves. It represents to the employee that I am right there with them, to the last hour of the day.” That dedication translates to contented employees.

Patty does everything “from soup to nuts,” ordering supplies, helping department managers as necessary, reviewing goods as they come in, scheduling floor workers for the day, serving as an HR department, and answering questions from drivers, stores and sales staff in 11 states.

When needed, Patty still works on the floor, side-by-side with the workers. As Patty says, “That builds great morale and gives workers a strong comfort level.” The ultimate multi-tasker, Patty likes the chess game that each day bringers her. She says that “leadership skills and strategy techniques make every day an exciting challenge.”

With 30 years at Joseph Krow, Patty believes that the staff is “really like an extended family.”

Lisa Boynton, Wedding Gown Specialist

As a wedding gown preservationist, Lisa Boynton has the pleasure of working every day with every bride’s fairytale dream: her wedding gown. With highly specialized training, and a degree in psychology, too, Lisa spends her days carefully checking in each gown piece – a veil, garter or the gown itself -- as it arrives at Joseph Krow.

She then inspects the gown and accessories for stains, reviews the manufacturer’s care instructions and assesses the beading and ornamentation. Following Lisa’s evaluation, the gown moves on to the cleaning station. After it is pressed, it is returned to Lisa so she can perform her “preservation magic.” From making sure tags are neatly tucked in to artfully displaying the gown in its box, Lisa takes personal pride in every one of the 300-plus gowns she treats each month.

Lisa says she gets great satisfaction knowing the bride will be delighted when her cherished gown is returned. Lisa has seen so many gowns from various shades of white to pink, from the ornate to the simple. When asked if she preserved her own wedding gown, she replied, “Of course, I wore my mother’s gown, which, thankfully, was preserved.”

Maybe one day Lisa’s daughter will also wear that preserved gown.

Mandy Cimba, Customer Service Representative

Mandy Cimba has literally “grown up” at The Joseph Krow Company. Mandy’s mother, Pat, has worked at the company for nearly 30 years, and Mandy’s first job in high school was working at the plant. Fast-forward 12 years, and she still calls The Joseph Krow Company home.

Much like the other mangers, Mandy has worked in other areas at the plant: wedding gowns, finishing, brushing, gluing, garment check-in, medical cleaning, bed & table linens, and billables. She also created a systematic linen production line.

In 2009, Mandy wanted to challenge herself further, and expanded her responsibilities to include customer service for leather and suede goods. She finds her work very rewarding, and especially likes explaining to clients The Joseph Krow Company’s capabilities.

“Many times, I’m on the phone helping to educate our clients, and sometimes even their retail customers, about the specifics of leather and suede cleaning.”

Mandy’s day often starts quite early, beginning with checking an abundance of messages and walking the plant to see what jobs might need immediate attention. Her primary goal is to keep things moving, and she does it extremely well.

“Often, I look up at the clock and the entire day just flown by. There is so much to do, and I love the responsibility.”

Michale Crooks, Customer Service Representative & Estimator

Having worked at The Joseph Krow Company for more than 20 years, Michale Crooks is proficient in the business of dry cleaning! She is yet another multi-tasker at the plant, and has become a specialist in estimating. Michale started as a bagger and a “glove girl,” working her way up to a brusher and finisher, checking goods in and dabbling in billables.

A considerable knowledge of estimating allows Michale to consult with each department, be it wedding gowns, leather and suede repairs, rugs or any other part of the operation, and perform “reconnaissance missions” that enable her to ask questions of the people on the line and develop solid work estimates for clients. With experience in retailing, Michale can “think like a customer” and anticipate what their concerns might be. If a more detailed explanation is needed for an estimate, Michale often calls the customer to explain the basis for the estimate.

As for what keeps Michale enthusiastic about her work, “The day-to-day variety, the quick ‘on your toes thinking,’ the how and why of what I do, is what I find most interesting.”

Margarita Koutsakis, Furrier/Seamstress

Globetrotting Margarita Koutsakis found her way to Joseph Krow after 30 years of experience in the fur business. Margarita knows her furs. Taking up the family trade as a seamstress, furrier and all-around expert, she learned at the knee of the best-of-the-best in New York.

Margarita also understands the fur business, as she owned two boutiques in Manhattan, and another in Athens, Greece.

In Europe, Margarita graduated from an prestigious apprenticeship, adding to her impressive resume.

Part alchemist, Margarita loves to remodel coats and literally re-purpose fur into something totally new. As she puts it, “I love to see the clients’ reactions to their ‘new furs.’”

Shirley Hochman, Office Manager

The title “office manager” isn’t a broad enough title to describe what Shirley Hochman does. Part manager, part uber multi-tasker and part juggler, Shirley loves wearing many hats at Joseph Krow. With more than 20 years of dedication to The Joseph Krow Company, Shirley knows the day-to-day aspects of the business that keep things moving along smoothly.

Every day, Shirley arrives at the plant at 6:30 a.m. to start what can be an unpredictable day. As she says, “I like the variety of my work. It keeps things interesting.”

Nearly 25 years ago, she worked in retail, which honed her abilities to deal with the public. Prior to that experience, she worked in an office, and it was there that she mastered the art of multi-tasking.

Shirley is responsible for checking in the drivers, pulling their paperwork, issuing sales commissions, getting tickets, delivery slips, organizing accounts payable for nearly 4,000 clients, performing account forensics, applying payments, issuing and reconciling statements, answering phones, collecting receivables, client relations and much more. She is truly Joseph Krow’s very own Renaissance woman.

Shirley says, “I love the day-to-day challenges. Even after 23 years, I still wake up every day wanting to come to work.” And that says a lot.
